What Is Arthritis?

If you have arthritis, you’ll know its painful effects all too well. But what’s actually happening inside the knee? In this video, Yorkshire Knee Clinic’s Dave Duffy explains.

What Does An Arthritic Knee Look Like?

According to Arthritis Research UK, 1 in 5 adults over the age of 45 has osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. If you have OA, you’ll be all too familiar with the pain, swelling and stiffness that can be part and parcel of the condition. But what’s actually happening inside the knee?

In this short (3m8s) video, Dave Duffy takes a camera into a healthy and an arthritic knee, for a revealing look at the differences between the two.

Notes for the squeamish: This video features footage from inside the knee.

•  There is no blood – because neither the articular cartilage on the ends of the thigh and shinbone nor the meniscus have their own blood supply.
•  You will see the off-white cartilage and meniscus and, in the arthritic knee, some of the exposed bone below.
•  You won’t see any part of an active operation.
