From injury to returning to training, here’s the step by step guide to recovery at our Yorkshire sports injury clinic.
For any sportsperson, the temptation after suffering any form of knee injury is to try and play on, and then to give things a little time to see if they’ll heal naturally.
In reality, however, many knee injuries don’t recover with time – and even those that appear to improve (because, for example, pain or swelling subsides) may never recover sufficiently to enable you to safely return to sport.
If you’ve suffered a sporting knee injury, the faster the diagnosis the quicker the treatment (if required) can begin. And if treatment or surgery is required, the faster it happens, the more complete the recovery is likely to be and the quicker you’ll return to action. That’s why it’s so important to talk to our knee specialists for Yorkshire now.
Making your first appointment
In most instances, your first appointment at our Yorkshire sports injury clinic will follow a referral from your GP, physiotherapist or other specialist.
Diagnosis
A Yorkshire Knee Clinic knee consultant will examine your injury and diagnose the problem. To make a complete diagnosis you may need an x-ray or MRI scan.
Treatment
Your knee surgeon will recommend the best form of treatment. For twists and strains, that may involve simple rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE). It may involve a course of treatment with our physiotherapist partners. Or it may, in the case of meniscal tears or some ligament damage, involve surgery.
Pre and post-op
You can help speed up your recovery by taking a positive approach to surgery. Naturally active people who are at or around their ideal weight and BMI will usually respond to treatment better than someone who is inactive or overweight, and the risks are lower. As a sportsperson, your overall fitness will give you a head start on your recovery but it’s important you take our Yorkshire knee specialists’ advice before and after your operation to ensure you don’t push things too far too fast.
Returning to sport
It’s vital that, when you return to sport, your knees can cope. That’s why the knee consultants at our Yorkshire sports clinic will carefully manage your return to activity so that once you’ve recovered, you’ve recovered for good.
