The sign that says you need urgent attention

When your knee swells within an hour of suffering a knee injury, don’t ignore it.

Suffer a knee injury and, for many people, their first reaction is not to see their Skipton knee consultant. Instead, they either attempt to carry on regardless or rest the leg and hope things will settle down.

But if you suffer a heavy knee injury (e.g. a hard fall, a twisting injury whilst running or skiing, or a tough sporting tackle) you may not be able to carry on regardless.

If the knee swells within one hour of injury, then see your knee specialists for Skipton as soon as possible.

Why you need to see your knee consultant quickly

A swiftly swelling knee usually means bleeding on the knee, and bleeding on the knee is typically the result of one of the following:

  1. A fracture
  2. A very large meniscal or cartilage tear
  3. A dislocated knee cap (patella); or
  4. A torn ligament

What to do next

If you’ve fractured something, you’ll be unable to place weight on your leg and you’ll need immediate attention. Go to A&E.

For any of the other injuries, you’ll still require the urgent attention of your knee consultant.

Quickly making an appointment with our knee clinic near Skipton is important because the faster your knee specialist can diagnose your injury, the faster we can begin treatment and the faster your recovery can begin. Most crucially, seeing your knee specialist for Skipton within two weeks of injury improves your chances of a complete recovery and reduces your chances of suffering secondary injuries.
