Jon Smith, MBChB (Hons) MRCS (Ed) FRCS (Tr.& Orth)
In 2013 Jon was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon at The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust and Spire Healthcare. He currently carries out treatment at two hospitals: Spire Leeds Methley Park and Spire Elland Hospital in West Yorkshire.
Jon’s specialist interests include the management of sports injuries, partial knee replacement and joint preservation surgery in young adults. He is affiliated with a number of elite sports clubs in the Yorkshire region, including Super League and Championship rugby league teams.
His main interest outside surgery is sport, in particular, trail and fell running. He is a veteran of the iconic Yorkshire 3 Peaks Race, with a personal best of 3 hours 39 minutes and has recently completed the Ben Nevis Race in a sub 2-hour time. Jon has previously been a Yorkshire cross country champion and played senior level football in the West Riding County Amateur League. In the spring and summer months, Jon enjoys a leisurely game of golf with friends and colleagues.
Knee Surgery Experience
To date, Jon has completed over 6,000 operations including 2,000 knee arthroscopies, 1500 total knee replacements, 500 partial knee replacements and 500 anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructions. Jon is a former recipient of the prize for outstanding performance in arthroscopic (keyhole) knee surgery, awarded by the British Orthopaedic Association.

In 2000, Jon graduated from the University of Liverpool, in the top 5% of the national cohort, gaining a first class honours degree in medicine and surgery. After completing basic and higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery within the Yorkshire region, he became one of the youngest surgeons ever to pass the Royal College Fellowship examinations. Jon’s name was added to the GMC Specialist Register in 2011.
Jon’s springboard into consultant practice was supported by The Yorkshire Knee Clinic’s Prof. Nick London, with whom Jon completed a high-volume fellowship in 2010. Following this, Jon completed a prestigious 18 months national fellowship at the Royal Derby Hospital with Tim Wilton, past BOA president, and Guido Geutjens, sports knee surgeon for Derby County FC and other Premier League football clubs. During this period, he completed more than 1,200 independent knee operations.
Research and Development
Jon’s research work has centred on joint preservation surgery for the treatment of young adults with knee osteoarthritis and has been presented at international meetings and published in peer-reviewed journals.
In 2014 he was one of only three UK consultant surgeons selected to join an evolving European Excellence Programme based in Zurich, with a primary focus on orthopaedic product innovation and implant design.
Jon is currently a lead investigator for a national multi-centre clinical research trial to evaluate the BioPoly RS implant – an innovative device to treat young adults with early knee arthritis. Jon has been involved with the design of the device and a number of his patients feature on the BioPoly website.
Teaching and Training
Jon is a popular trainer of senior orthopaedic registrars on the regional Yorkshire Deanery Programme and was recently nominated for the annual trainer of the year award. He is a faculty member of many national and postgraduate orthopaedic courses.
Jon has worked closely with both Smith and Nephew Sports Medicine and Schwartz Biomedical in consultancy, educational and product development roles. Through this work he now offers a national and international Visiting Surgeon Programme (VSP), which involves surgical colleagues from across Europe and the UK visiting Jon to gain experience in contemporary knee surgery techniques.
